Globalisation

Here and There @ Wall Street, Eindhoven
The workshop with Belle Phromchanya as part of Dutch Design Week, lead us to the title ‘Globalisation’ for our projects. It was inspiring to see how her work was a commentary on her country’s current issues but in a light manner. This invited the public to join - as if a movement was being created. We were to find our personal reality - to create design interventions as coping mechanisms, but to do so in a light or comedic way if possible. To create a visual intervention that questions, disrupts or redefines the way the world is now a smaller place. I first started thinking about cultural appropriation, and wondered how that exists or makes sense in a world that is becoming more and more alike. I decided to focus on symbols that have been adopted by different cultures and given new meaning, whether that be negative or positive. I aimed to narrow it down to what I know, my culture, so I started looking at Irish and Celtic symbols. I gathered research about symbols and their misuse. I was surprised to find that most of the Celtic symbols I am very familiar with, were too adopted from something else originally. I have noted and imagined various ways to display the findings in a fun way for the project and have displayed just a few examples of the ID cards I designed.
