Ecstatic Dance
This zine was created during my studies abroad in the Netherlands. It focuses on the socially accepted ways of partying or enjoying ourselves, and how there are alternative ways to do this without intoxication, dress-codes or hook-up culture. I’m talking about Ecstatic dance, which is defined as: ‘a form of dance in which the dancers, without the need to follow specific steps, abandon themselves to the rhythm, and move freely as the music takes them, leading to trance and a feeling of ecstasy, without the means of alcohol or drugs.’ I want to expose this possibility to people - to explore how this behaviour is seen as strange to society, yet it is that of being sober and natural, opposed to ordinary club nights which we have been taught to view as normal. Featuring my interview with DJ Iradi & photography ...
"An open dance party without alcohol or drugs: everyone who attends enjoys the night with limited speech, and in turn, connects to the music on a different level. " This is a natural occurrence which you can experience. Free-form movement is growing in places around the world - particularly in places like Amsterdam, Hawaii, Toronto and New York city as well as on Vancouver Island and the many smaller islands on the west coast of Canada. “Trance is not just some mystical experience, which belongs to special people, it belongs to human beings who are prepared and willing to dance themselves into that state”.
