As we share more and more data online it is gathered, packaged and sold. It is then analysed to create psychological profiles of us that know our most personal and private information such as, your likelihood of being female, the chances you are conservative, your current emotional state, how reliable you are, or whether you are heterosexual etc. Many people are becoming more aware of data protection from the new European data protection regulation of 2018. However, although they are aware of data protection, they may not be care if their data is being used and certainly do not want to read the long winded privacy policies every time they visit or become a member of a website.
Beginning our project, we composed a series of interview questions which were about general data protection and whether students are aware/care about their data and how it is being stored and used. We then began introducing questions about politics and whether the students have ever experienced political advertising targeted towards them and whether it influenced their decision when voting. We also interviewed the students on misleading information and whether they know if they are being misinformed or not. From the results we discovered that most of the students were somewhat informed about politics but were easily mislead by elections. They also stated that they obtain most of their information about politics from sources online that may have been shared from people they follow or their friends. Many of the interviewees had experienced an instance of politically targeted ads and others either did not notice or did not seem to care. Through our research we have also discovered that the issue is more prominent in places such as the United States and the United Kingdom.
For the project, our aim is to bring awareness to the subject. We aim to make students as well as people of all ages aware that they may be a victim of political targeted advertising. We hope that after bringing awareness to the subject that it will drive students to inform themselves about politics and look to find information from reliable sources as well as not believing the first thing they see online.
The website then serves the purpose of being a bank of resources available to people to ensure that they have an unbiased way of staying informed. The website also monitors instances of political targeted advertising all around the world with the option of checking to see if it is happening near to your own location. Case studies are also available which give people easy access to the worrying examples of targeted political advertising that have happened around the world that may make them rethink. We believe that the narrated animation is effective enough to highlight and bring awareness to the issue. The website, which follows after the video is where we hope viewers will visit having been informed about the issues we have highlighted.
